There was an exchange of gunfire near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville as congregants gathered inside to mark Yom Kippur, the authorities said.

The Israeli officials said an arrest had been made. The attack was on the eve of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Violence in the territory has grown recently.
