Death row inmates used to be held together at the San Quentin state prison, but they have since been transferred to other state facilities and moved into the general population.
Gov. Gavin Newsom, who is considering a run for president, called capital punishment morally objectionable. Though California hasn’t executed anyone for 20 years, that represents about a quarter of death sentences nationwide.

Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the state to develop recommendations on safety measures, including requiring companies to build a “kill switch,” amid mounting concerns.
