There was an exchange of gunfire near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville as congregants gathered inside to mark Yom Kippur, the authorities said.

Thirty-seven people died in the authorities’ custody, officials said. Survivors said the cell had barely any ventilation, food, or water and people began “collapsing and dying.”
