Zelda is back and better than ever

7 November 2026 at 13:49

Hi, friends! Welcome to Installer No. 151, your guide to the best and Verge-iest stuff in the world. (If you're new here, welcome, get psyched because it's officially Bad Holiday Movie Season, and also you can read all the old editions at the Installer homepage.)

This week, I've been reading about Andrew Garfield and GTA VI and sexy joke thieves, finally actually watching The Sopranos for the first time (I know, I know), mourning the end of Salon, reinstalling the new and extremely improved Notion Calendar, testing the new Keurig Alta coffee machine, reviewing the iPad Mini and the touchscreen MacBook Pro, and really thinking about just thr โ€ฆ

Big Tech lost big in the 2026 election

6 November 2026 at 16:38

On Tuesday, millions of American voters went to the polls and voted overwhelmingly for Democrats and against AI. The fight against Big Tech is about to come roaring back, and the fight over data centers is looking even harder for the folks trying to build them.

On this episode of The Vergecast, Nilay and David discuss what the 2026 midterms mean for the tech industry going forward. They dig into the self-quarantining echo chamber that is X, the congressional energy likely to be pointed at tech CEOs and AI regulation, and whether anything is actually likely to get done in the next two years.

After that, the hosts turn to AI. Specifically, โ€ฆ

The touchscreen MacBook Pro is a winner

5 November 2026 at 14:00
A person reaches out to touch a laptop screen.

I keep forgetting the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display has a touchscreen. I've been testing this new laptop, one of the most impressive Apple has ever created, for the better part of a week. I can't stop noticing some of its other features: the slimmer design, the improved display, the Dynamic Island that somehow catches my eye more than the notch ever did. But I keep forgetting that as I go about my day, I can now reach out and poke the screen.

Come to think of it, that might be exactly what Apple intended. Steve Jobs said touch laptops were a bad idea; some subset of users demanded one anyway. Now the MacBook Pro has one. But not in a โ€ฆ

The 2026 iPad Mini is a terrific tiny tablet โ€” for a big price

3 November 2026 at 14:00

The iPad Mini sometimes feels like a trap. It is, in some ways and for some people, the perfect iPad: meaningfully larger than my phone's screen but still small and light enough to use for reading in bed or gaming on the subway. As most of the rest of the iPad line has tilted ever closer to laptop territory, the Mini might be the most iPad-y iPad left. I've taken a Mini everywhere with me since the very first one. But Apple only updates the Mini sporadically, and those updates sometimes feel like someone inside Apple Park picked its specs by closing their eyes and clicking randomly in an Excel sheet. The Mini is always a little underpowered, โ€ฆ

Touchscreens everywhere!

31 October 2026 at 12:00

Hi, friends! Welcome to Installer No. 150, your guide to the best and Verge-iest stuff in the world. (If you're new here, welcome, happy Halloween, and also you can read all the old editions at the Installer homepage.)

This week, I was in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee on a family vacation. It was delightful (and the reason this week's Installer is a little short). I've also been reading about job hunting and 30 Rock and crypto detectives, testing the DuckDuckGo browser after a bunch of you told me to add it to the list, watching the adorable new Pixar short over and over, getting caught up on VisionQuest, playing with my new Pebble Index โ€ฆ

The delightfully messy state of Apple gadgets

30 October 2026 at 17:25

The iPhone has more screens! The MacBook has a touchscreen! The HomeView does CarPlay apps! For the first time in a long time, Apple is in a period of unabashed gadget experimentation, and while the final results aren't always perfect, it's fun to watch the most successful product maker try some new things again. Even when, in this case, "trying" amounts to just slapping a touch panel on a lovely new MacBook Pro - just to see if you might use it.

On this episode of The Vergecast, David and Nilay debate the merits of a touchscreen laptop, Nilay explains why he is absolutely positively going to buy the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, โ€ฆ
