Why a new report on Anthropic automating AI development is alarming researchers

Anthropic is using AI to build more powerful AI. And it appears to be working remarkably well, with the company's models improving roughly twice as quickly as a year ago, with little indication of slowing down.

That's according to a new report published Thursday by the AI safety research organization METR, following an 11-week investigation inside the company, as part of a report evaluating its AI research and development. The probe is separate from a program offering safety researchers "employee-like" access to systems in the wake of high-profile hacking incidents over the summer.

The findings offer some of the clearest evidence yet of AI …

Claude AI can plug directly into your bank account

5 November 2026 at 18:00
Three phones showing previews of Personal Finance in Claude

Anthropic has a new pitch for managing your personal finances: let Claude do it instead, with a new Personal Finance feature that connects it to your bank and card accounts via the Plaid bank bridging platform. You can ask the chatbot "where did my money go this month," for example, and it'll create an overview with a breakdown of spending by category, including rent and utilities, shopping, and food. Claude can also answer broader questions around what bills are left before your next payday, if you can afford big purchases like holiday trips, and how much money you could be saving each month.

Its access is read-only, and with Plaid facilit …

Please stop asking me when the AI bubble will pop

People, including on this staff, keep asking me with varying degrees of excitement or trepidation when the AI bubble will burst. I'll tell you what I tell them: If I knew that, I would make a life-changing bet on the market, levered up as far as I could, and then, after I made my money, go retire on a beach somewhere. Maybe run a cat sanctuary, who knows.

What I can tell you is that I read with interest a story in Bloomberg this morning: "Wall Street CEOs, Big Money Managers Divided Over AI Risks." The story itself is a roundup of stuff said at the 2026 Global Financial Leaders' Investment Summit in Hong Kong. Here's what caught my attentio …

Anthropic clamps down on Claude’s AI video game clones

2 November 2026 at 18:56

Anthropic has updated Claude Code's system prompt to prevent the AI tool from being used to re-create existing video games, as reported by Tom's Hardware. Retro gaming is currently being overrun with AI-made decompilations, recompilations, and ports, but while Anthropic will still let people use Claude Code to make games, it doesn't want people to use it for direct clones.

Last week, a user on X posted a screenshot allegedly showing two new sentences added to Claude Code's system prompt: "Do build original games, games in a genre, and games from the user's own designs and assets. Don't build a recreation of a specific existing game, even if …

I built an AI Tamagotchi before Meta could

31 October 2026 at 16:05
A silver pendant touchscreen computer with a cute little tamagotchi like mascot on screen.

Mark Zuckerberg's Meta made AI look so stinking cute by giving it a squishy little face - and this holiday season, he wants to sell you a Muse Charm so you can carry your jolly AI helper around like a Tamagotchi.

But I won't be buying one, because we have Muse Charm at home. It cost just $50, and I've decided the learning experience was worth it.

My version doesn't sport cameras or a 5G cellular radio, but it really talks to Muse and has cute avatars, too! It doubles as a pocket watch and a remote camera viewfinder, and it can (theoretically) control my smart home.

Or at least it can if you inject a lot of extra vibe code.

Weeks …

The biggest names in AI are backing a new way to opt out of scraping

OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic say they will adopt a new standard that publishers can use to opt out of being scraped by AI, as reported earlier by Search Engine Roundtable. With this control, publishers can apply their AI training preferences across multiple AI companies, instead of setting them individually.

The shared "policy token" signal is proposed by Kevin Kelley, a technical lead for standards at Anthropic, as part of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It will live within a website's robots.txt file, which has long signaled which web crawlers can and can't scrape a site - whether for search indexing, archiving, or …

Silicon Valley wants you to invest in miracles

30 October 2026 at 13:11

Investing in any stock is kind of like gambling in the sense that you're betting your money on a company's future performance. But how do you bet on a technology that could, in the worst-case scenario, "pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity," or best case, "bring forth an age of miracles"?

To some extent, Anthropic suggests in a letter at the top of its S-1 filing, you have to just believe.

Anthropic's 335-page S-1 prospectus, filed Monday, is part of a steady hype escalation in Silicon Valley's interactions with Wall Street. In some ways, it's not even that bizarre; SpaceX IPO'd in June after filing an S-1 that referenced din …
