Mayor John Whitmire has instructed Houston police to stop notifying immigration agents when they encounter someone without legal status during routine street stops.
On Monday, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said officers across 15 states had stopped more than 1,000 commercial trucks and arrested about 40 immigrant drivers, including some with serious criminal charges.
The Trump administration’s campaign to identify and charge immigrants in connection with voting violations has led to fears of being jailed, or deported.
The Trump administration has intensified pressure on states to identify noncitizens who are voting. Election officials say the government’s system is flawed.
